The
Pilates Method
The
Pilates Method is an exercise technique based on the philosophy and teachings
of Joseph Hubertus Pilates (1880 - 1967). Drawing inspiration from both
eastern and western exercise regimes, Pilates devised an exercise method
in the early 1920's that aimed to connect body and mind and stimulate
the neuromuscular system.
Focusing
upon proper use of breath, controlled yet relaxed movements and a strong
abdominal centre, the Pilates Method is an extremely effective and safe
form of exercise. Muscular imbalances can be corrected, postural alignment
improved and strength and flexibility increased.
Exercises
are performed with specialised equipment, using spring resistance to
streamline and strengthen the body. All classes are tailored to fit
the individual's requirements so the method is safe for rehabilitative
exercise as well as body conditioning.
