Directors
Dominique Jansen first
learnt the Pilates Method at Pilates off the Square whilst studying contempory
dance at the Laban Centre between 1986 and 1988. In 1988 Dominique was
offered an apprenticeship at the studio by former owner, Hana Jones. After
completing her degree in dance theatre (1988) Dominique pursued her dance
career, studied choreography and somatics at the Theatre School in Amsterdam
(1991-1993) and taught Pilates Mat and studio work part time. In 1995
she returned to the UK and dedicated herself to teaching Pilates. She
worked at Pilates off the Square, Fulham Physiotherapy, Central School
of Ballet and the dance department of Middlesex Polytechnic. In 1997 she
took over the ownership of Pilates off the Square with Sian Williams.
She founded the Pilates off the Square teacher training course in 1998,
training six students per year. She gives lectures and workshops to other
Pilates teacher training centres and for the Pilates Foundation UK. Dominique
was a board member of the Pilates Foundation UK between 2001 and 2003
and is currently a member of the organisation’s Educational committee.
Dominique is also
a certified Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis teacher and is further qualified
to pre-train others in Gyrotonic. She has been teaching Gyrotonic since
September 2000.
Sian Williams began
learning the Pilates Method in 1986, after completing a Post-Graduate
degree at Sussex University in 1985, and was invited to train with Hana
Jones the following year. She has taught at Pilates Off the Square since
1987 and for the dance department of Middlesex Polytecnic( now Middlesex
University). She also worked as a massage therapist for over ten years
alongside teaching Pilates. She was a founder member of the Pilates
Foundation UK and held a Board position between 2004 and 2005. She lectures
on the training course at Pilates Off The Square and has given workshops
for The Pilates Foundation UK.
Sian is also a certified
Gyrotonic teacher and has been teaching Gyrotonic since 2003.
Both Directors have
many years of teaching and training experience between them and are
considered experts in their field by colleagues. They have contacts
with Pilates teachers abroad as well as at home in Britain and have
both studied under expert teachers in the U.S, Europe and the UK.
